Write About Happiness

When I first saw this particular 30 Day Writing Challenge list and saw "Write About Happiness" I thought "okay, sure."

Writing this right now I realize writing about happiness is not easy! Making a list of things that make me happy, like I did in a previous post, is the easy part. Writing about what the feeling is itself...not so much. I wasn't even sure exactly how to define the word. One may think the word "happiness" is just defined by a smile on ones face, but it's more than that. It's also about how someone feels.

Webster defines happiness as:

"a state of well-being and contentment" or "a pleasurable or satisfying experience"

Happiness is such a personal thing. What makes me happy may not bring the same joy to someone else. But that's okay! It's called being human.

Things that make you happy now may not make you happy or as happy 5 or 10 years from now either. It's an ever changing emotion and grows or matures as a person goes through different life stages. Coloring in a coloring book may bring a three year old great joy, but it won't seem as exciting when that three year old is 16 years old. This doesn't mean they won't like coloring, it may just mean something different to them and the level of happiness may change. I'm almost 28 and coloring still brings me some kind of joy. Who doesn't love to color?

If you were to ask most people who know me, like I've mentioned in my post about things that make me happy, I'm usually always smiling and it doesn't take much to bring me joy, or make me laugh. I think my life song is Martina McBrides "Happy Girl".

Happiness to me isn't only about the material things as these things aren't permanent. They may be shiny and new at first, but then they get old or fade and there will always be a newer or updated version of that thing right around the corner.

What brings me happiness and joy are the things that are constant like my family, my lifelong friends, my pets, freedom (because God Bless the USA), the air I breathe, etc.

Take a moment and think of what the word "happiness" means to you. I bet you haven't really thought about it before. Difficult, huh?
